March 17, Chicago. 5:30 PM. Regular meeting of the Chicago Map Society at the Newberry Library, 60 West Walton Street. Check society website for program details.

March 24, Boston. 5:30 PM. Boston Public Library, regular meeting of the Boston Map Society. The Library of Congress’s Senior Cartographic Librarian, John Hessler, presents “From Ortelius to Champlain: The Lost Cartographic Works of Henry David Thoreau”.  For more information, call 617-661-3718, or email Jeremy Pool.

March 24, Washington, DC. 7:00 PM.  Meeting of the Washington Map Society. The life of famed explorer, cartographer, and scientist Alexander von Humboldt is the focus of the evening’s presentation, entitled “Alexander von Humboldt and his Cartographic Relevance for the Americas”, presented by author and University of Texas at Arlington professor Imre Josef Demhardt. Madison Building, Library of Congress, 101 Independence Avenue.

March 31, London. 5:00 PM. The “Maps and Society” Lectures at the Warburg Institute, University of London, Woburn Square. The lectures are free, and open to the public. This month’s lecture features Tom Harper, of the British Library, whose lecture is entitled “A Window on the World: Maps in the European Schoolroom in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries”. April 5, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 5:00 PM. The American Geographical Society Library at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, is the site of this year’s “Holzheimer Maps & America” lecture. Susan Schulten of the University of Denver’s History Department will present “Cartographic Innovations in the Civil War Era.”  The evening’s program begins with a reception, and the lecture follows at 6 : 00 PM. April 9, New York. 2:30 PM.  The New York Public Library is the location for a regular meeting of the New York Map Society. Guest speaker will be Chet Van Duzer, an independent historian and author of the recently-published book, “Johann Schöner’s Globe of 1515: Transcription and Study”. Mr. Van Duzer will speak on “Exploring Renaissance Geography on Johann Schöner’s Globe of 1515″.

April 9, Richmond, VA. The Library of Virginia is the location for the 2011 Alan M. & Nathalie Voorhees Lecture on the History of Cartography, sponsored by the Fry-Jefferson Map Society. April 14, Washington, DC. 7:00 PM. Meeting of the Washington Map Society. At this regular meeting of the Map Society, past president of the society, and map reference specialist at the Library of Congress, Ed Redmond, will discuss the library’s upcoming Civil War Sesquicentennial Virtual Map Exhibit. Library of Congress, Madison Building, 101 Independence Avenue.

May 10, Cambridge, England. 5:30 PM. Nessa Cronin, of the National University of Ireland, presents ” ‘Number, Weight or Measure’: Mapping Colonial Governmentality in William Petty’s Political Anatomy of Ireland.” Professor Cronin’s lecture is part of the Cambridge Seminars in the History of Cartography 2010-2011 at Emmanuel College, St. Andrew’s Street, in the Gardner Room.
