The life of famed explorer, cartographer, and scientist Alexander von Humboldt is the focus of the evening’s presentation, entitled “Alexander von Humboldt and his Cartographic Relevance for the Americas”, presented by author and University of Texas at Arlington professor Imre Josef Demhardt. March 31, London. 5:00 PM. The “Maps and Society” Lectures at the Warburg Institute, University of London, Woburn Square. The lectures are free, and open to the public. This month’s lecture features Tom Harper, of the British Library, whose lecture is entitled “A Window on the World: Maps in the European Schoolroom in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries”. April 5, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 5:00 PM. The American Geographical Society Library at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, is the site of this year’s “Holzheimer Maps & America” lecture. Susan Schulten of the University of Denver’s History Department will present “Cartographic Innovations in the Civil War Era.” The evening’s program begins with a reception, and the lecture follows at 6 : 00 PM. April 9, New York. 2:30 PM. The New York Public Library is the location for a regular meeting of the New York Map Society. Guest speaker will be Chet Van Duzer, an independent historian and author of the recently-published book, “Johann Schöner’s Globe of 1515: Transcription and Study”. Mr. Van Duzer will speak on “Exploring Renaissance Geography on Johann Schöner’s Globe of 1515″.
