Antique Maps & Prints Meetings

October 4-6, London. Various locations around London provide the settings for the event-filled, three-plus days of the 28th International Symposium of the International Map Collectors’ Society. A visit to the society website is essential to get an understanding of the various events that are planned, with locations.

October 8 Arlington, TX. The University of Texas at Arlington, Central Library, Sixth Floor Atrium. The 7th Biennial Virginia Garrett Lectures on the History of Cartography.  The theme for this year’s event is Charting the Cartography of Companies: Company Mapping 1600-1900. An examination of how maps reflect and shaped the history of chartered companies, such as the Hudson Bay Company and the Dutch East India Company.

October 9, Arlington, TX. The University of Texas at Arlington, Central Library, Sixth Floor Atrium. The Virginia Garrett Lectures continue with the Fall meeting of the Texas Map Society, which brings renowned scholar and author Peter van der Krogt to the society, to speak on “North America in Dutch Atlases: 16th – 20th centuries”.

October 10-13, Arlington, TX. The University of Texas at Arlington, Central Library, Sixth Floor Atrium. The Virginia Garrett Series concludes with the Third Annual Symposium on the History of Cartography. The symposium welcomes all persons interested in the history of maps — not restricted to academics. Collectors are also welcome. The focus will primarily be on maps from the mid-18th to the mid-20th centuries.

October 11, Valletta, Malta. 6:00 p.m.  Museum of Fine Arts. The Malta Map Society committee meeting. For more information, email Rod Lyon.

October 14,  London. 7:00 p.m. The National Maritime Museum, Romney Road, Greenwich. The Royal Society Lecture Series presents a two-part program on Stuart cartography:  Gillian Hutchinson, curator of the history of cartography at the museum, presents “Edmond Halley: Charting Scientific Discovery.”  Adrian Webb of the British Cartographic Society presents “A Beneficiary of Science: Captain Collins and his Survey of Great Britain, 1681–87″.

October 14, London. 5:30 p.m. The Royal Geographic Society, 1 Kensington Gore. The annual E.G.R. Taylor Lecture. Capt. Hans D. Kok presents a lecture on: “Dutch maritime charts between 1550 and 1800.” This event is co-sponsored by The Hakluyt Society, The Society for Nautical Research, and the Royal Institute of Navigation.

October 21, Washington, D.C. 7:00 p.m. Geography & Map Division, Madison Bldg. Level B, Library of Congress, 101 Independence Ave. Meeting of the Washington Map Society. Dr. Wesley Reisser, a former winner of the Ristow Prize, will give a talk entitled “Redrawing the World: President Wilson and the Effort to Redraw National Boundaries at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.” Dr. Reisser’s lecture will include a discussion of early 20th century map-makers.
