November 3 - 4, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The William P. Cummings Map Society hosts a two-day conference with the theme Maps for the New Nation: Mapping and Cartography of the United States, 1776 - 1860. The conference meets at UNC - Chapel Hill in the Wilson Library.

October 22, Philadelphia. The Geographic Revolution in Early America. 2:00 pm. Hosted by the Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia. Also on the day of the lecture, the currrent exhibition at the Rare Book Department, Unimaginable Coasts: European Exploration and the Conquest of the Americas, will be open to the public from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.

October 26 - 28, Washington, D.C. Annual Meeting of the Philip Lee Phillips Society. Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division, Reading Room, Madison Building, 101 Independence Avenue. Also on October 26, at 7:00 pm, Dr. John Rennie Short (Professor of Public Policy, University of Maryland, Baltimore County), will deliver a lecture entitled Cartographic Encounters in the New World.
