First Map To Name Canada Going On The Block

An interesting post today on the Canadian Cartographic Association's blog: the first map to name Canada is to be auctioned at Christie's next month. Paolo Forlani's world map, published in 1562, will be offered for sale on June 9. But according to Rodney Shirley's Mapping of the World, the name 'Canada' actually appeared on the first, 1560 version of Forlani's map. In either case, a rare gem, and one that is expected to fetch around $200,000.

The American Historical Print Collectors Society

Last week, we mentioned the International Map Collector's Society, IMCOS, which welcomes new members interested in antique maps. For the collector of antique prints, an excellent society worth considering is The American Historical Print Collectors Society. The AHPCS is "a non-profit group that encourages the collection, preservation, study, and exhibition of original historical American prints produced from 1600 to 1900".

This is a very active society, with regular meetings, activities, and a membership committed to scholarship and authoring articles. The society's twice-yearly journal, IMPRINT, is an outstanding publication, containing in-depth, important research articles about historical prints.

The AHPCS website is full of useful information and links for the print collector. If you are an advanced collector, you probably know about the society. If you are a beginner, a visit to their website is highly recommended.

Antique Maps & Antique Prints News

Announcing a new format for the blog

In order to increase coverage of antique maps and antique prints around the internet, we are changing the format of the blog a little. Previously, we have previewed antique map and print auctions in-depth, by highlighting interesting lots for sale. In the future, we will continue to announce the upcoming auctions, but we will just announce the basic information, such as category of sale and date. This will allow us to devote more time to covering the antique maps and antique prints community around the internet. After all, if you are interested in a specific auction, their site is just a click away, because we always include a link to the auction website. Please shoot us an email if you feel there is something worth covering that we are not blogging about.

New International Map Collectors' Society Site

The International Map Collectors Society is one of the premier groups for people interested in antique map collecting. They have revised and redesigned their site, and it is well worth a visit.
