| Essentially the earliest obtainable antique map specifically devoted to the state of Rhode Island. It was first published by Matthew Carey in his 1795 American Atlas, which was the first atlas with soley American subject matter published in this country. The same year, the maps from that atlas were published, again by Carey, as part of Guthrie's Geography. The present example is from that volume, making it the first state of this map. The legend 'J. Smither, Sculp.' appears below the oval which surrounds the title. (Smither's name is removed as time goes by, as the map is revised and republished by Carey through 1818). The map shows towns and villages, lakes and rivers, township and county boundaries, principal hills, main roads, and so forth. An important 18th Century American map. References: Wheat & Brun, #250; Rumsey, p.1172-7. In exceptional condition, with a clean image and crisp impression. Margin is trimmed close to neatline in one or two spots, but generally is adequate for matting. Several folds as issued. |
