Beautifully handpainted butterfly print, plate number 40, published in British Butterflies And Their Transformations, London, 1841. This magnificent work was created by naturalist and artist Henry Noel Humphreys, whose boundless enthusiasm for butterflies prompted him to compile this, the first definitive work on British butterflies. The plate shows a group of butterflies of predominantly gold color. The colors are rich, and beautifully executed. The image area is smaller than the 11" x 8.5" sheet. Some browning to right edge of sheet, which can easily be covered by matting. Otherwise, very good condition.
