The Durham Argus and Artaxerxes Butterflies
Description
Beautifully handpainted butterfly print, plate number 37, published in British Butterflies And Their Transformations, London, 1841. This magnificent work was created by naturalist and artist Henry Noel Humphreys, whose boundless enthusiasm for butterflies prompted him to compile this, the first definitive work on British butterflies. The plate shows a group of butterflies, set against a branch of green leaves and pink flowers. The colors are rich, and beautifully executed. The image area is smaller than the 11" x 8.5" sheet. Very good condition.
