| The Colton family dynasty, one of
America's foremost map and atlas publishers of the nineteenth century,
published their first original atlas, the two-volume Colton's Atlas of the World,
in 1855. This monumental work stands as a landmark in the history of
American cartography. Perhaps because of its lavish size and expense,
it was published only for two years, 1855-1856, before being compressed
into a single volume in 1857. The present map, hand-colored by region,
depicts major cities and towns, mountains, lakes, rivers, railroads,
major roads, canals, battlefields, and so forth. With an inset of
Gibralter. Some browning to margins, otherwise very good. Reference:
Phillips, Geographical Atlases, numbers 816 & 6116. |
