| Plate 98 from the 1st octavo edition, Quadrupeds of North America, by John James Audubon,
published in 1851. Dramatic print of the Ring-Tailed Bassaris, in stalking mode. The bassaris is a raccoon-like animal that lives in the southern United States and Mexico. Audubon's great work stands today as the monumental 19th-Century record of American animals. The production of the series was overseen by Audubon's sons, V.G. Audubon and J.W. Audubon. Small brown spot just above text line, well away from image area. Very good condition. |
