An increasingly scarce little black and white map, from John Melish's Description of the United States, published in Philadelphia in 1822. Melish's work was published in a number of editions, beginning in 1814. The map shows the country around New York City, including Elizabeth to the west, Fort Lee to the north, beyond 'Harlaem,' the edge of Long Island to the east, and Sandy Hook to the south. New York City is confined to the tip of Manhattan, below 14th Street. Brooklyn is a tiny town across the East River, with Bedford, Flatbush, Flatlands, New Utrecht, and Gravesend separate settlements. At 'Fort Richmond' on Staten Island are 'Signal Poles.' With a concave-cornered border. Copper engraved. Very good condition. A very desirable antique map of New York.
