Very well-detailed, pre-Civil War map of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with a good-sized inset plan of Boston, published circa 1856. A striking, attractive map by one of the best American mapmakers of the 19th century, J. H. Colton. Lots of topographical detail, including hand-colored counties, cities, towns, mountains, rivers, lakes, railroads, coastal features, and more. Also shows nice detail on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. A little browning in the margins, but the image area is clean and bright, with decorative scroll border. One or two marginal chips repaired on back with archival tape. Printed text on verso (back). Very good condition overall.
