Map of the World on the Mercator Projection
Description
Attractive and brightly-colored 19th century world map. Published by S. Augustus Mitchell in 1860. In this hand-colored map produced at the beginning of the Civil War, Canada appears as a small region surrounded by the vastly bigger 'British Territory.' Alaska is named 'Russian Territory', and part of eastern China is labelled 'Mantchooria.' Hawaii is still called 'The Sandwich Islands.' A highly decorative border frames the map nicely. Very small centerfold separation at bottom, outside of image area. Very good condition.
