| The Colton family dynasty, one of America's foremost map and atlas publishers of the nineteenth century, published their first original atlas, the two-volume Colton's Atlas of the World, in 1855. This monumental work stands as a landmark in the history of American cartography. Perhaps because of its lavish size and expense, it was published only for two years, 1855-1856, before being compressed into a single volume in 1857. This county map of Kentucky and Tennessee, with a copyright date of 1855, is from the North American section of volume I. Each county is individually hand-colored, and the map shows county seats, roads, railroads, towns, villages, mountains, rivers, and so forth. Margins quite heavily browned, but image area largely unaffected, overall very good, printed on thick paper, and blank on verso. Reference: Phillips, Geographical Atlases, numbers 816 & 6116. A desirable antique map of Kentucky and Tennessee. |
