Spectacular steel-engraved view of this Rhode Island coastal landmark, so well executed it could almost be mistaken for a black and white photograph. The attribution indicates that it was engraved based on the famous painting by William Haseltine, but in fact it is a somewhat different perspective. The plate is from William Cullen Bryant's Picturesque America, the most elaborate book of North American views published in the 1870s. Major artists and engravers were employed on this monumental work. Issued on a heavy paper, with very wide margins. In very good condition.
