| An important mid-19th century map of Florida, published by the S. Augustus Mitchell firm in the New Universal Atlas, and derived from the H. S. Tanner atlas of the 1830s. The map is in near pristine condition, with crisp, clear color and sharp engraving. The appearance of the map is especially striking since many maps from this atlas are frequently in poor condition. Just four large counties dominate southern Florida: Dade, Monroe, Hillsboro, and the pre-Brevard county St. Lucie. Unlike today's St. Lucie, this St. Lucie would become Brevard County, and existed only from 1844 to 1855.
In addition to towns, villages, forts, lakes, rivers, and other features, the map also contains text showing the water routes around the state with distances between towns. There are three insets on the map, depicting town plans of Pensacola, Tallahassee, and the 'Harbour of St. Augustine.' In all, a significant and desirable map for Florida collectors. A little chipping to the edge of the sheet, well away from image area. Overall, very good condition. |
