Fascinating early antique map of New York, on a large sheet, surrounded by extensive French text relating to the state. The text deals with subjects such as geography, history, population, government, etc. This map comes from the French edition of the notable Carey and Lea's American Atlas, first published in 1822. The French edition, published in Paris by J.A. Buchon in 1825, is considered to be of finer quality, both in terms of engraving and paper. The edges of the sheet are uncut, as usual. The map depicts individually hand-colored counties, along with towns and villages, roads, rivers, lakes, mountain areas, and so forth. with a profile of the Grand (Erie) Canal. Some light toning, otherwise very good condition. Note full sheet size is considerably wider than image area, due to text around the map.
