Carte Des Parties Du Nord-Ouest De L'Amerique Suivant les Voyages de Middleton et d'Ellis
Carte Des Parties Du Nord-Ouest De L'Amerique Suivant les Voyages de Middleton et d'Ellis
A very attractive antique map, with decorative cartouche, by the accomplished French mapmaker J. N. Bellin. This map of the Hudson Bay area, while dated 1753, was actually published in 1759, in Antoine Francois Prevost d'Exile's Histoire Generale des Voyages... While the geography is commendable for its day, Bellin was quite confused about the settlements (York Factory, Port Nelson) in the southwest corner of the Bay, and an enormous 'Isle Barren' seems to be an amalgam of Coats and Southampton Islands. A group of islands called 'Baker's Dozen' seems to represent the present-day Ottawa Islands. The 1746 route of Henry Ellis is clearly shown, but despite the map's title, Christopher Middleton's route is absent. A beautifully crisp engraving. Two folds as issued, otherwise very good condition.
