| Plate 98 from the Royal Octavo 1st edition, The Birds of America, by John James Audubon,
published 1840-1844. The Blue Mountain Warbler, with predominantly yellow and green coloring. Audubon's Birds has been called one of the "most beautiful, popular, and important natural history [works] published in America..." (Ron Tyler, Audubon's Great National Work,1993.) The plate offered here comes from the first octavo edition, produced under the exacting eye of Audubon himself, and printed by J. T. Bowen of Philadelphia. Very good condition. Note: this particular plate was never bound into book form, but rather was originally issued in the earliest format available, as a fascicle, or softbound, serialized pamphlet which contained text and five plates. These fascicles were purchased by subscription, and when the set was complete, they would be bound into a book by the subscriber. Plates from fascicles are quite rare. |
