A beautiful, double-hemisphere world map published by S. Augustus Mitchell in his New Universal Atlas in 1846. Mitchell purchased the rights to H. S. Tanner's Universal Atlas in 1846, and published several editions under his own name that year. Unlike the Tanner atlas, the Mitchell version used lithography rather than copper-engraving to produce the maps. This particular world map has retained vivid, original hand color. A little age-toning on the sheet, largely outside of the image area; otherwise very good condition.
