A New Map of Nth. Carolina
Description
Beautiful map of North Carolina, with fine original hand coloring, published in Mitchell's New Universal Atlas, Desilver edition, in 1856. This is one of the most attractive 19th century maps of North Carolina. The Gold Region is shown in inset at bottom left. At the top is displayed an inset of the Trenton/New Berne area; a table of distances between towns, and a 'Profile of the Dismal Swamp Canal.' The map indicates towns, cities, forts, roads, railroads, battlefields, swamps, rivers, coastal features, lakes, mountains, and more. The full name of the map is 'A New Map of Nth. Carolina with its Canals, Roads & Distances from place to place along the Stage & Steam Boat Routes.' The map is in excellent condition, with just a little yellowing to the sheet edges, and one spot of foxing on bottom edge. Reference: Phillips, List of Geographical Atlases in the Library of Congress, 4336:18.
